Phytoplankton abundances and community structure in the equatorial Pacific

چکیده
In both the warm pool region and the high-nutrient low-chlorophyll (HNLC) region of the equatorial Pacific, the phytoplankton community is dominated by high concentrations of picophytoplankton regardless of whether El Ni * no, La Ni * na or normal conditions prevail. Flow cytometry measurements indicate that the picoplankton community consists of two species of prokaryotes, Prochlorococcus and Synechococcus, and a diverse mixture of picoeukaryotes that cannot be differentiated. Analyses of chlorophyll and carotenoid pigments, determined by HPLC, confirm the importance of Prochlorococcus and Synechococcus and indicate that the eukaryotes are predominantly haptophytes. There are at least three ecotypes of Prochlorococcus and, possibly, various ecotypes of Synechococcus. These ecotypes have quite different pigment ratios and, possibly, pigment to carbon ratios, which complicates comparisons between cell counts by flow cytometry and the contribution that prokaryotes make to total chlorophyll as calculated from pigment analysis. Increased productivity is associated with the transient influx of nutrients, El Ni * no conditions in the warm pool, or surface nutrients in HNLC waters. Under these conditions there seems to be a small increase in the relative abundances of Synechococcus, diatoms and chlorophytes. Grazing of picophytoplankton by macro-grazers may make an important contribution to the ‘biological pump’, which may not be dominated by large phytoplankton such as diatoms. r 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. Simulations of Phytoplankton Species and Carbon Production in the Equatorial Pacific Ocean 1. Model Configuration and Ecosystem Dynamics
The primary objective of this research is to investigate phytoplankton community response to variations in physical forcing and biological processes in the Cold Tongue region of the equatorial Pacific Ocean at 0N, 140W. This research objective was addressed using a one-dimensional multicomponent lower trophic level ecosystem model that includes detailed algal physiology, such as spectrally-depe...
متن کاملIron and silicate regulation of new and export production in the equatorial Pacific: A physical-biological model study
[1] Based on a physical-biological model with monthly mean forcing, numerical experiments are conducted to examine the effects of iron and silicate availability on phytoplankton growth in the equatorial Pacific. The effects of elevated iron are realized in terms of increasing the phytoplankton light acclimation efficiency (a) and decreasing the molar ratio Si/N of diatom uptake. The increase of...
متن کاملDeclines in phytoplankton cell size in the subtropical oceans estimated from satellite remotely-sensed temperature and chlorophyll, 1998–2007
Satellite remotely-sensed sea surface temperature (SST) and surface chlorophyll were used to estimate median phytoplankton cell size at monthly and 11 km resolution over the global ocean, 1998–2007. The temporal dynamics of median phytoplankton cell size were examined for the Pacific equatorial upwelling region and the subtropical oceans. For the equatorial upwelling region, cell size varied co...
متن کاملEcosystem dynamics and export production in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific: A modeling study of impact of ENSO
[1] Biogeochemical responses to physical changes associated with the El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phenomenon are studied for the period of 1990–2001 using a physical-biogeochemical model. During warm ENSO, the ferricline deepens in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific, resulting in low biomass and low export production. Zooplankton and large phytoplankton are more depressed than sm...
متن کاملPrecessional forcing of nutricline dynamics in the equatorial atlantic.
Climate control of nutricline depth in the equatorial Atlantic can be monitored by variations in the abundance of the phytoplankton species Florisphaera profunda. A conceptual model, based on in situ evidence, associates high abundances of F. profunda with a deep nutricline and low abundances with a shallow nutricline. A 200,000-year record of F. profunda relative abundances, obtained from a de...
